Seminar on Experimental and Underground Cinema

Event Date:

July 21, 2017

Experimental And underground Cinema
The talk explored how generations of artists have expanded the idiom of the moving image through a deliberate denial of cinematic conventions and traditional modes of narrative and working methods.

Contextualized within the framework of specific art movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism, the discussion will highlight the practices of the early experimental filmmakers such as Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali and Man Ray. The talk will also touch upon the American and European avant-garde filmmakers, Stan Brakhage for instance and how in the post-war era when boundaries between the different forms have collapsed, the moving image is being constantly refurbished through an interface and interplay with emerging new media, such as video.

Beyond the relevant references, the talk also underscore the historical and political impulses that have given a fillip to experimental film makers to explore the nuanced layers of reality that contest and expand the conventional version of truth.
