iLEAD and the U.S. Consulate General, Kolkata, organized The Jefferson Debates 2021. It is a platform for students to contemplate and voice opinion on critical issues of today.
Students from Goenka College, Loretto College, Department of Management (Calcutta University), Department of Law (Calcutta University), IIHM, Bharati Vidyabhawan Institute of Management, Jadavpur University, IGNOU, Sister Nivedita University, South Calcutta Girls’ College, George College, Sanskrit College and University, Surendranath Law College and iLEAD.
The topic of the debate was ‘The U.S.-India strategic relationship will boost business growth in the Indo-Pacific region’. The students presented their debate both for and against the motion.
The debate session was attended by the U.S. Consul General Melinda Pavek who talked about the India-U.S. relationship. She also spoke about the ‘spirit and future of the two vibrant democracies’. She also talked about ‘Building social, political and cultural relationship’ and ‘areas of U.S. and India cooperation’.
Mr. Pradip Chopra, Chairman of iLEAD, in his speech addressing the audience talked about the views and philosophy of the former American President, Thomas Jefferson, who was also the principal author of the ‘Declaration of Independence’ (1776).
The debate session was judged by Debdutta Nandwani from Asian-African Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kapil Kaul from the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.
The 1st position in the debate was secured by the Department of Law from Calcutta University. The 2nd position was bagged by Sanskrit College and University. And the 3rd spot was secured by the South Calcutta Girls’ College.
