Celebration of World Cancer Day 2025 at iLEAD: ‘United by Unique’ Campaign Overview

Event Date:

February 4, 2025

On February 4th, 2025, the Allied Health Department of iLEAD celebrated “World Cancer Day” at the Dale Carnegie Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to increase awareness about cancer and promote its prevention, early detection, and effective treatment by industry professionals. This year, the event’s theme was “United by Unique” worldwide, placing people at the centre of care and their stories at the heart of the conversation.

The event featured Dr. Ashish Upadhyay, (MBBS, MD on Radiation Oncology, DM (Medical Oncology & Hemato-Oncology and ECMO Consultant), Dept. of Medical Oncology & Hemato-Oncology, Ms. Debopriya Paul, a proud alumna of iLEAD and Ms. Nabanita Mukherjee, a colon cancer survivor. These esteemed guests were felicitated by Dr. Soumen Chatterjee, Principal of iLEAD, who acknowledged their contributions and the valuable perspectives they brought to the event. Dr. Upadhyay emphasized the importance of recognizing cancer's warning signs and seeking timely medical assistance by providing knowledge on different cancer diseases. He clarified that a cancer diagnosis does not accelerate the disease's progression; rather, cancer often exists long before symptoms emerge. He also addressed common misconceptions, highlighting that while a healthy lifestyle reduces cancer risk, it doesn't provide complete immunity. He urged individuals to be vigilant and proactive in their health.

At the event, Ms. Paul was honoured for her remarkable resilience. Diagnosed with Thyroid Carcinoma at 16, just two months before her 10th board exams, she underwent surgery and, despite significant challenges, took her exams only 20 days post-operation. Her story exemplifies that with courage and perseverance, one can overcome adversity.

Additionally, the event celebrated the achievement of Ms. Mukherjee, a two-time colon cancer survivor whose resilience inspires many. Drawing inspiration from her journey, she now counsels individuals battling chronic colon cancer through the Cancer Fight Foundation, an NGO dedicated to cancer awareness and support. Her dedication to assisting others makes her a true inspiration.

The day concluded with an inspiring workshop where students got certificates for their creativity and talent in bringing consciousness among people regarding cancer through artistic creativity. The event successfully increased awareness about cancer and promoted its prevention, early detection, and effective treatment, aligning with the global theme of placing individuals and their stories at the heart of the conversation.
