Why the Tea Management Industry?

The industry which is celebrating 200 years in 2023 is also besieged with several sustainability challenges today which necessitates an innovative relook at the entire management of the tea plantations. Last 40 years has seen unabated rise in the unorganized unskilled sector which led to overproduction of inferior teas that surpassed the production in the organized sector set up mostly by the pioneering British planters, low price realization, increasing cost of production, worker shortage, enhanced stress due to climate change related factors and stagnating export. Thus, the industry requires well qualified professionals equipped with a perfect blend of tea technology and innovative and emerging fields of ICTs, AI and IoT based tools for effective, profitable and holistic management of the tea plantations for sustainability. The skilled professionals will also be required to look beyond the cup and make the plantation’s inherent ecology, rich heritage bungalows with sprawling campuses attractive tourist’s destinations and explore other possible diversification avenues to enhance quality of life of the growers and resident workforce.

On a worldly basis, tea is the second most consumed and popular beverage. India is the second largest country after China that produces, exports and consumes tea. The Indian Tea Industry has evolved as one of the most technically equipped tea industries in the world and has also grown its own tea brands on a global scale. Some more reasons as why one should choose to be in the Tea Industry are as follows:

  • The Tea industry is expected to produce an annual crop of 1.40 million tonnes by 2026.
  • The rapid growth of per capita income and increasing of urban youth population especially in the Asia Pacific region are making the absorption of comparatively higher priced green tea.
  • As tea is one among the fast-moving FMCG product all over the world, the career opportunities for managers in tea plantations have also improved.
