Exploring Darjeeling – The Queen of Hills: A Journey Beyond Classrooms!

Event Date:

April 2, 2025

A classroom without walls and textbooks — that’s what the second-semester students of the Travel & Tourism Department at iLEAD experienced during their 3-night, 4-day educational tour to Darjeeling from April 2nd to April 6th, 2025.

The group, comprising 9 enthusiastic students and 2 faculty members, embarked on their journey from Esplanade, Kolkata to Siliguri — beginning an adventure that seamlessly combined learning, culture, and nature. Their base for the trip was nestled in the serene surroundings of Risheehat, with a picturesque stop at Kurseong en route.

Day 2 was packed with immersive experiences and breathtaking sights. The students explored iconic landmarks of Darjeeling, including the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute — a treasure trove of mountaineering history — and the fascinating Darjeeling Zoo, home to rare Himalayan species. They soaked in the scenic beauty of Batasia Loop, found peace at the Druk Monastery, walked through lush tea gardens, and embraced the local vibe at the bustling Darjeeling Mall.

On their return journey, the group ventured into the lesser-explored charms of Mirik. Highlights included a tranquil visit to Mirik Lake, strolls through the scenic Mirik Garden, and a brief cross-border experience at Simana Basti in Nepal’s Koshi Province. They also explored the Castleton and Gopaldhara Tea Estates, learning about tea processing and plantation tourism firsthand. This offered students a real-world glimpse into tea tourism and agro-based entrepreneurship.

Beyond sightseeing, the tour had a strong academic component. Students worked on case studies exploring the “home stay” model of tourism, learning how local families are turning their homes into thriving guest experiences — a growing trend in sustainable and community-based tourism in the hills. They observed, interacted, and documented real-life examples, enriching their academic curriculum with valuable, on-ground insights.

This educational tour allowed students to connect theory with practice, broadening their understanding of travel, culture, and the tourism business — all while creating unforgettable memories in the lap of the Himalayas.
